Why Columbus, Texas works for Houston and Katy commuters

Columbus sits on the Colorado River at the junction of I-10 and State Highway 71, about 65 miles west of Houston. For buyers who want acreage and quiet but still need the city within reach, that location is the whole point: country living with a real commute corridor on the doorstep.

The drive times, honestly

Under normal traffic, Columbus is roughly 45 miles from Katy, a drive of about 42 to 48 minutes on I-10 East. Houston is about 73 miles, roughly 70 to 75 minutes. Austin is about 90 miles via State Highway 71 West, around an hour and a half. Peak-hour commutes into Houston can run longer, so plan around the traffic you will actually face.

Why the drive is worth it

The trade for the commute is a town with real character. Columbus is the Colorado County seat, and its historic square is anchored by the 1891 courthouse, on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1886 Stafford Opera House still hosts performances, the Live Oak Art Center shows local work, and the Santa Claus Museum is one of the more unexpected stops in Texas.

Nature is the real amenity

Around Columbus, the Colorado River, live oaks, and open farmland define the landscape. The town is even home to the second-largest recorded live oak in Texas. For anyone who spends their week on the Katy or Houston freeways, coming home to starry nights and the sound of the wind in the trees is a genuine reset.

Practical daily life

Columbus has groceries, hardware, dining, and services along the highway corridor, so you are not driving to the city for every errand. And when you do want the city, Katy's retail and the Grand Parkway corridor are a manageable drive away.

Putting it together

For buyers weighing a homesite like 324 Shorebird Ln in Wild Wing Preserve, the math is simple: a gated, wooded lot with fiber internet, about 15 minutes from town and roughly an hour from Katy. If that balance sounds right, Carol would love to show you the land.
